Hello friends!! It’s been a hot minute. Ya boi’s been going THRU IT these last couple months and now I’m back at the weekly newsletter :) How are you? Feel free to shoot me an email back with just three words to lmk how you’re doing.
My recent updates:
I went to Hawaii over the holidays which was wonderful
I moved back to the Bay Area permanently!!
I started (and finished!) a ceramics class
The last few months have been a whirlwind of old and new, creating and not creating, feeling deeply emotional, and feeling nothing at all. This week especially, the world seemed particularly tumultuous and fragile. I hope you’re taking care of yourself a little deeper during this time.
🌱 Lessons from the last few months
1. I’m here to bless people, not impress them
Whether that’s with my art, my ideas, or simply my presence, there is no one I need to be, nothing I need to do, or nothing I need to say to be loved or accepted. I must simply be me, and that’s enough.
2. Compassion for my inner child
Children can only understand the world through the lens of their own experiences. They are physically incapable of understanding that their parents, teachers, authority figures could be flawed, so everything others do becomes about them. A parent’s anger at something they say becomes “Being honest makes me unsafe.” A teacher’s annoyance becomes “I’m too much.” And a classmate’s bullying becomes “If I’m seen, I’ll get hurt.”
I’m learning to find compassion for this inner child within me. I’m learning to hear him out in all his feelings and fears, and let him know that I’m here to protect him.
3. I respect my feelings
If I respect my feelings, I have to express them. This is revolutionary for me. If I’m upset, and I respect my feelings, I have to tell the person who upset me. I don’t need that person to do or say anything at all– the power comes from simply expressing them. As a kid who never expressed negative feelings to anyone ever, I’m feeling more seen than I ever have lately simply by being honest about how I feel.
